Last week we were learning about Maori Language Week. We did a whole school haka. We learned how to say colours in Maori and we learned how to say hello in Maori. When we finished the whole school haka we did one Jump Jam song.

Contractions

         

We are learning to find contractions in our stories. We know that contraction are two words that are squashed together. I can find contractions easily because they have an apostrophe in them.

I am good at contractions because one letter goes away when you squash the two words together. We put an apostrophe in the place of the letter goes away. My next step is to tell the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Fractions

We are learning about fractions. We know that one quarter is when we cut something into four pieces. We also learnt about halves which means we cut something two pieces. Fractions are ½ ¼ and ⅓. With fraction you start with one whole and you cut it into pieces.

I know about fractions because if I give my brother 1 and I have 3 it is not fair but if we each take have it will be fair. I will give my brother 2 and I will have two

Compound sentences

We are learning to write compound sentences. We know that a compound sentence is two sentences that we put together with ‘and’ ‘but’ or ‘because. It can be tricky to make sure we join two sentences together and not just another word to a sentence.

I am good at compound sentences because I always make sure I join two sentences together to make a longer sentence. My next step in writing is to add more describing words in my writing.

Skip counting in 2's

I like maths because I am good at skip counting in 2's. It is tricky to skip count in 2's to bigger numbers. I will work on my skip counting every day so I get better.

I like reading because I get to practise my phonics on the iPads. I am good at finding word endings and the root words. The root word is a word that can stand on its own. I am working on finding contractions in my readers.
